ASPLogistics Management

Logistics and supply-chain specialist

Complex supply-chain problems, researched, modelled and made workable.

ASP Logistics Management investigates difficult logistics problems that cross operational, commercial and regulatory boundaries, then turns the findings into delivery models that are efficient, compliant and commercially realistic.

Where the work sits

  1. ProducerGrower, miner, manufacturer, recycler
  2. AggregationCollection, storage, packing
  3. Road and railTransport contracts and networks
  4. TerminalAccess, handling and landside charges
  5. VesselCarriers, freight and documentation
  6. MarketImporter, customer, processor

Cost, compliance and efficiency tend to break down at the handovers between participants. That's where Paul's work concentrates.

Approach

How a project runs

Each engagement is built around delivery. The work starts with the evidence and ends with an operating model that can be implemented in the real world.

  1. Research the problem

Detailed industry and regulatory research, including historical data and the commercial record.

  2. Test the assumptions

Check what participants believe about costs, volumes and constraints against what the evidence shows.

  3. Map the supply chain

Trace the physical flow of goods and the commercial flow of charges, contracts and responsibility.

  4. Identify the regulatory requirements

Environmental, biosecurity, competition and shipping regulation, across state and national borders.

  5. Develop the operating model

Cost and volume models, process design and an implementation plan that stakeholders can act on.

Projects

Current and recent work

Australian Shippers Alliance

Australia's container-port charging model

An evidence-based examination of how terminal access and empty-container charges developed, who ultimately bears those costs and how more transparent and efficient arrangements might operate.

  • Shipping regulation and competition policy
  • Terminal operations and historical charging data
  • Supply-chain cost analysis from the cargo owner's side
Wine Australia (CCA posts)

End-of-life CCA-treated vineyard posts

A national model for managing treated timber posts at end of life, from regional stockpiles through to lawful disposal and processing.

  • Regional stockpiles and annual flows quantified
  • Transport and aggregation networks mapped
  • Cross-border biosecurity and environmental requirements tested
  • Cost models for industry implementation

Selected engagements

With Trace Consultants · Recent

Import supply-chain cost benchmarking

Researched and benchmarked the costs built into the supply-chain model of an overseas leisure craft manufacturer shipping into Australia and New Zealand from Canada, the USA and Mexico, and compared them with competitors in the same market where possible.

The client had outsourced its supply chain to a global logistics provider and wanted to confirm it was getting the best deal. The findings confirmed it was, with one exception: warehousing, where competitors running their own warehouses were doing so at lower cost.

Wingara AG · Bendigo to Port of Melbourne

Export fleet feasibility study

Assessed the case for Wingara to run its own fleet carrying 20 × 40' export containers a week from Bendigo to the Port of Melbourne. The study costed trucks, trailers, drivers and systems, mass management and Chain of Responsibility compliance, and terminal and empty-park access.
